RE: TOBACCO GROWING IN SIERRA LEONE
It gives us great pleasure to present a brief history of Tobacco Growing in Sierra Leone. Firstly we would like to inform you Sierra Leone NO WAR. Sierra Leone is in the process of building the agricultural sector in the country. Agriculture is one of the areas that His Excellency Earnest Bai Koroma has made one of his priorities. NADeCo is the National Agricultural Development Company of Sierra Leone dealing with all phases of Agriculture. At present we interested to engage in conversations with companies to market our Tobacco. We are also looking for companies to finance our crops. We are in interested in sourcing a reputable company that can assist us with expanding our Leafs. Sierra Leone has a history of having the most ferti ...le soil and we are able to grow very premium Tobacco. I am enclosing a brief history of our activities in the Tobacco Growing industry.
Leaf Tobacco growing in Sierra Leone started in 1961 by a British Tobacco Company (BAT .CO) subsidiary Aureol Tobacco Company (ATC) and Rokel Leaf Tobacco Development Company.
Over the years the following crops of leaf tobacco were grown by the company
Air Cured
Fire Cured
Flue Cured
Air cured and Flue cured was grown for local cigarette manufacturing and Fire cured was for the Export market. Sierra Leone earned a good reputation for growing Fire Cured Tobacco
Rokel Leaf Tobacco Development Company and Aureol Tobacco Company closed down in 1996 and 1992 respectively
The National Agricultural Development Company (NADECO) bought over from RLDC and ATC and started growing Fire Cured Leaf Tobacco for export. The overseas customers were Stan Com, a British American Tobacco Company subsidiary in London.
NADeCo Operation
The National Agricultural Development Company has restarted growing Fire Cured Leaf after the lull due to the war.

Grades
Leaf grades are determined by the leaf position on the stock and they include

Leaf Middle portion leaf
Cutters Lower middle
Lugs Next to primings
Primings Sand lugs
Fire Cured Grades
P Grades
Superior quality fully dried ripe clean and spotless leafs from the top plants position. Mahogany in color with superior body and leaf special, elastic and oily
Minimum length over 21
D Grades
Good quality fully ripe and clean with minimum spotting. Mahogany in color with good body and leaf spread elastic and oily length 19 to 21
E Grades
Medium quality for over to under fired leaf with medium spotting / blemish tearing and mainly from bottom plant position. Light to dark Mahogany Length 16 to 18
F Grade
Fair to low quality length 10
Cultural Practices
No Chemicals Sprays are used
Use only field fertilizer N.P.K. 15: 15: 15 as basel and NP.K. 0: 20: 20 a top dressing. Crop rotation is encouraged for tobacco farmers where rice, groundnuts and maize are used. In this respect the tobacco grown is basically consistent with international standard requirements (without artificial chemicals)

Except demands shifts either way then targets will be altered to suit customers needs. Nursery and field operations have started already. Leaf purchase will start in September each year and leaf delivery to customers will be in December each year.
